Peeling Facial Mask, Katrin Dohse, 2018

After almost 150 years in business the doors to Haeger Pottery closed several years ago. Midday on May 30th, 2022 I moved clockwise around the sprawling structure, shooting particularly at the corners. Afterwards, as is my habit, I overlaid images and played with them in Photoshop. This series is a subset of the result.

As a child I went shopping with my family at Haeger Pottery many times. I recall the delight I found in this old building. I learned later that the clay they used was sourced nearby in the sides of the Fox River valley. A creek ran through the middle of the factory and excess clay was placed in the creek and deposited in the middle of the adjacent Fox River. In the late 1970s, when I worked delivering electrical equipment, I made deliveries to the factory. Even now I recall the unique smell of the interior.
